Bilingual not Effective, Dual Language as the Solution (2)


According to a recent study result, bilingual education system in Indonesia is not significantly effective because it ignores Bahasa Indonesia. It will affect children when they enter a higher grade of study. Dr. David Freeman, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Yvonne Freeman, Professor of Bilingual Education from United States of America revealed their study about bilingual education which emphasizes the use of foreign language at school. Freeman said that the mastery of foreign language is very important but do not ignore first language or mother language, in this case is Bahasa Indonesia.
This idea was delivered by Freemans in a seminar which was held by Indonesian High/Scope School about ‘Dual Language, Theory and Effective Program’, Wednesday, May 13. This seminar was held to commemorate National Education Day. A research study from Thomas and Collier in 1997 towards students of United States of America was also explained in this seminar. Children who get their elementary education using first language (English) have a higher level of academic than children who get their elementary education using foreign language (Spanish). Realizing the important of first language instead of English, Dual Language is believed as a solution of academic problem which will be faced by children in the future. Dual Degree program refers to additive program that combine the using of first language and foreign language.
It is closely related with the forming of children’s beginning academic concept. Children who have a good concept of academic in their first language will have good academic competence of foreign language. Whereas children who do not have good academic concept of their first language will not have good academic competence of both language. Related to Freeman’s research in Washington, United States of America, this research showed that children who join on Dual Language program have a good academic competence both their first language and foreign language. They also become more successful and get a higher standard of salary in companies.
According to Antarina S.F Amir, Managing Director of Indonesian High/Scope School, in practicing Dual Language Program, the learning system use those two languages. There are some lessons using Bahasa Indonesia and there are other lessons using English. Then, in review, view, and preview, the learning system uses other language. Another ways of Dual Language application is deciding ‘Language of The Day’ alternately between English and Bahasa Indonesia so children will understand the concept both in Bahasa Indonesia and English. Children’s competence in using Bahasa Indonesia is also obtained.
Until now on, Indonesian High/Scope School is the first school in Indonesia which use Dual Language Program. Antarina said that this has been conducted since two years ago although the result is not yet seen. “Most schools which try to conduct this program and fail are they who do not be patient in testing Dual Language in their schools. It needs a patient because the result is probably seen four years later, it depends on each individual,” said Antarina.
